Exam Hall Survival: What to Bring, What to Do, Printable Checklist

Sitting in the exam hall can feel intense — but the right preparation can make you calmer, more confident, and ready to focus on the paper, not your missing pen. Here’s your guide to exactly what to bring, how to prepare, and the ultimate checklist to print and keep handy.

Before the Exam: Check Requirements

Different exams need different equipment. Read the exam information your school gives you and check:

  • Does this paper require a calculator? (Maths, Sciences, certain Geography papers)
  • Do you need a maths set? (protractor, compass, set square)
  • Will there be specific materials provided by the exam board? (e.g. formula sheets, source booklets)
  • Are there any forbidden items? (smartwatches, phones, revision notes)

If you’re not sure — ask your teacher or invigilator before the day.

Equipment Essentials

  • Multiple black pens (only black ink is allowed in most exams — bring at least 3 in case one runs out)
  • Pencil (sharpened)
  • Ruler (30cm is ideal, clear plastic preferred)
  • Eraser
  • Sharpener (with a container so you don’t make a mess)
  • Highlighters (if allowed — useful for picking out key words in the question)

For Maths & Science Exams

  • Calculator (fully working, battery checked, no stored data if not allowed)
  • Spare batteries (if your calculator uses replaceable ones)
  • Maths set:
    • Compass
    • Protractor
    • Set square
    • Extra pencil for diagrams

Comfort & Focus

  • Water bottle (clear bottle, label removed)
  • Tissues (small pack — in case of sniffles)
  • Transparent pencil case (mandatory)

Day of the Exam: What to Do

  1. Arrive early — at least 15–20 minutes before start time.
  2. Check the seating plan so you know where you’re going.
  3. Empty your pockets — no phones, notes, or smart devices.
  4. Organise your desk — only allowed items out, everything else under your chair.
  5. Read the instructions on the paper carefully before starting.
  6. Keep an eye on the clock — pace yourself but don’t rush.
